My background is as a music producer in the advertising world. I was employed by various Madison avenue agencies and created commercials for may large accounts. I was fortunate enough to have budgets that allowed me to work with many high-profile celebrities and producers from the record world. Two years ago, I started my own music production company and built a modest Protools studio at home. I've been creating work for advertising as well as recording music artists for CD release. I continue to learn and experiment. I have a greater appreciation than ever for the skills of 'real' engineers that I used to hire back in the day, when the only computers we used were for automating mixdown on the SSL. Trying to become an engineer myself has been a real challenge.
The is a recent project and is a production of a song that I wrote with my friend John Woosley. All recorded using a Protools LE 002 system and an Apogee Mini Me mic preamp with a iMac G5.
The arrangement was written around a recording of an acoustic guitar recorded to a click. The two sections were recorded separately and edited together.
The drums are a combination of looped samples that I created on a DW drum kit and bits played live. I used the Audix D6 on the kick and lower tom. SM 57 on snare ( top and bottom) and Rode NT2s as overheads.
I used Reason for Rhodes, grand piano, strings and a couple of synth effects. Otherwise all of the outdoor effects and instruments were recorded and created by me. Vocals were tracked with a Audio Technica 4033. As you can hear I used audiosuite in Protools to reverse and flange some vocals. Collings OM2H and Martin 018 acoustics were tracked with a Neumann KM184.
I used Waves Renaissance plug-ins along with some Bomb Factory compressors like the Fairchild (on toms) and the LA3 on bass. The Waves ILR reverb was used exclusively. The Massey Mastering Limiter was used for mixdown.
